Why Retargeting
Is Non-Negotiable
97% of first-time website visitors do not convert. Retargeting is how you bring them back. Here is why it matters and how to run it correctly.
The Direct Answer
Retargeting matters because 95–98% of first-time visitors leave without converting — and they're the warmest audience you'll ever buy. Ads shown to previous visitors typically convert at 2–5× cold-traffic rates at a fraction of the CPL, because attention and awareness are already paid for. An account without retargeting rents traffic; one with it builds an asset.
The Economics in One Example
Send 10,000 paid visitors at ₹15 a click (₹1.5L) into a 3% page: 300 leads. The other 9,700 vanish — unless a retargeting layer at ₹40–80 CPM re-engages them, commonly recovering another 60–150 leads at ₹80–₹200 each versus ₹500 cold. Same media, 20–50% more output, purely from not abandoning people you already paid to meet.
Segment by Behaviour, Not Just "All Visitors"
Message-match beats blanket reminding. Useful tiers: viewed key pages (pricing, a specific project/treatment/course) → direct offer with urgency; started form or added to cart → objection-handling plus a nudge (FAQ, guarantee, limited slot); engaged with video/social but never visited → invitation creative; past customers → cross-sell and review requests, excluded from acquisition messaging. Cap frequency (~3–6/week per user) and exclude converters religiously — being chased by an ad for something you bought erodes trust.
Creative for Warm Audiences
Cold ads introduce; retargeting ads resolve. Show testimonials and results, answer the top objection outright ("Yes, EMI available"), reveal the founder/doctor/faculty face, or add a reason to act now. Rotating 3–4 such angles keeps 30-day windows fresh; recycling the cold creative is why many retargeting sets fatigue in a week.
The 2026 Reality: Feed the Pool Deliberately
Privacy changes shrank pixel-only pools. Compensate by building audiences platforms track natively: video viewers, Instagram/Facebook engagers, lead-form openers — and by pushing your CRM lists (hashed) into custom audiences. Server-side tracking (Conversions API, Enhanced Conversions) keeps match rates usable. The retargeting layer is now something you architect, not a checkbox.
How Big Should the Budget Be?
Fund it to audience size, not ambition: 10–25% of spend is typical. When frequency climbs past ~6–8/week or CPMs spike, the pool is saturated — the fix is more prospecting upstream, not more retargeting money.
What's a good retargeting window?
Match it to your decision cycle: 7–14 days for low-ticket/local services, 30–90 for real estate, education, and B2B. Ladder windows (0–7, 8–30, 31–90) with different messages outperform one blob.
Why is my retargeting ROAS amazing but sales flat?
It's probably harvesting conversions that would've happened anyway (view-through inflation). Watch blended results, cap retargeting share of budget, and test incrementality by pausing it for a segment.
Does retargeting annoy people?
Bad retargeting does — same ad, high frequency, chasing purchasers. Segmented messages at sane frequency with converter exclusions reads as helpful continuity, and the conversion data reflects that.
